Southampton v Man Utd – Preview, Predictions and Best Bets

Southampton host Man Utd at St Mary’s in the lunch time kick-off on Saturday. Saints have won just twice in 15 Premier League matches but won 2-1 at Leicester a week ago. United are on a dire away run of seven consecutive defeats on their travels. A 2-1 home win against Liverpool will have boosted confidence as they look to gain some momentum under Erik Ten Hag.

Southampton Form

Saints ended last season in dire form. Their final 12 Premier League matches brought just five points, with a single victory and 30 goals conceded. Their only win was 1-0 at home to Arsenal and came on the back of losing 6-0 to Chelsea. Their six matches after that win saw five losses and 15 goals leaked including losing 4-1 at Leicester on the final.

This season saw a pretty poor first 150 minutes of action. They lost 4-1 at Tottenham on an opening day before 2-0 to Leeds after an hour. Two goals in the final minutes of that fixture rescued a 2-2 draw. Their last match brought a fine win, 2-1 at Leicester, as Che Adams scored twice in 17 minutes in the second half. They beat Cambridge United 3-0 away in midweek in the Carabao Cup as Adams scored two more goals. A strong XI was selected for the game.

Southampton Team News

Ralph Hassenhuttl is without two fullbacks for this match. Left back Romain Perraud has a problem and Tino Livramento is out long-term after knee surgery. Che Adams will surely start after four goals this week in place of summer signing from Bordeaux, Sékou Mara.

Other off-season signings in Armel Bella-Kotchap (centre back), Roméo Lavia (central midfield), and Joe Aribo (attacking midfielder) are set to start with the latter possibly to the right of Che Adams. The big question is whether Moussa Djenepo is trusted to play as a left back again. If not, Lyanco could come in as an extra central defender with Djenepo as a wingback.

Southampton Motivation

Saints used a back three in an opening couple of matches but they turned the Leeds game around by going to a back four. If they go with a four-man defence line with winger Djenepo at fullback, then it is clear they are playing for the win and won’t sit back.

If Hassenhuttl adds a defender and leaves out a winger, then maybe he considers a draw to be a good result from the off.

Man Utd Form

Man Utd beat Liverpool 2-1 on Monday night in a fine performance, albeit with 30% possession. Prior to that fixture, they had lost their opening two matches of the season – 2-1 at home to Brighton and 4-0 at Brentford.

Their finish to last season was very bad as their final eight fixtures brought five losses. They were beaten 4-0 at Brighton before concluding the season with a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. Their last seven away fixtures have all ended in defeat and they’ve been losing at half time in all of those matches too.

Man Utd Team News

Ten Hag has Casemiro available for this match to boost the midfield. It remains to be seen if he is thrown straight into the XI or whether Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen keep their spots in central midfield. It’s probably most likely for Casemiro to make his bow from the bench.

Anthony Martial looks set to start in preference to Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Elanga. At the back, Tyrell Malacia and Raphael Varane are set to retain their starting spots. Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire would therefore be left on the bench.

Man Utd Motivation

The approach will be interesting in this match. Man Utd could try to dominate possession and play out from the back, or use the blueprint which saw them beat Liverpool – using fast transitions and being more direct.

Either way, the side desperately needs another win and to end the terrible away streak. Anything less than three points would be seen as a poor result.

Key Stats

Southampton have won just 2 of their last 15 PL matches

Southampton have lost 5 of their last 7 home PL matches

Saints have conceded 2+ goals in 6 of their last 7 home matches (PL)

Southampton are winless in 13 matches against Man Utd (L6, D7)

Man Utd have lost 7 of their last 11 PL matches

Man Utd have lost their last 7 away PL matches (21 goals conceded)

Man Utd have failed to score in 5 of their last 6 away PL matches

This match looks an ideal one for United to take three points and start picking up momentum. Saints can be a potential banana skin though considering United’s terrible away form. I am backing there to be goals in this one.
