Villarreal Juventus Betting Predictions

Villarreal v Juventus – Preview, Predictions and Best Bets

Villarreal welcome Juventus to the Estadio de la Cerámica in the UEFA Champions League this evening. The visitors topped their group ahead of holders Chelsea, whilst the Yellow Submarine finished second in theirs, behind Man Utd. Both sides are facing a fight for a top-four finish in their respective leagues. An interesting match tactically awaits us.

Villarreal Form

After impressive 5-2 and 5-0 home victories against Alaves and Levante, Unai Emery’s side had a three-match winless run. That streak included losing to Sporting Gijon in the Copa Del Rey before throwing away a 2-1 lead to draw with Atletico Madrid. A 1-0 defeat at Elche followed.

Emery has turned things around since then. His side beat Mallorca before beating high-flying Real Betis 2-0 away from home. A 0-0 home stalemate followed against a distracted Real Madrid. Their last match saw a 4-1 win at lowly Granada. Arnaut Groeneveld netted a hattrick (albeit with two penalties) before a late Moi Gomez netted a late fourth from the bench.

Villarreal Team News

Unai Emery is still without Francis Coquelin in central midfield. Etienne Capoue and Giovani Lo Celso are slight doubts but should both be fit to feature. Villarreal rested several players at Granada and all should return to play.

Juan Foyth and Raul Albiol should return in defence. Samuel Chukwueze is also set to start down the right-wing. Paco Alcacer faced competition to start upfront from hattrick hero Arnaut Groeneveld with Gerard Moreno still out injured. Arnaut Danjuma should also return after missing the weekend match after some recent knocks.

Villarreal Motivation

Emery sets his side up to be hard to beat in the tougher matches. They could allow Juventus lots of possession and play on the break or use transitions.

This match will see Villarreal go all out for a win. A 0-0 draw is no longer a good first leg result since the away goals rule was scrapped.

Juventus Form

Juve are in some reasonably good form. They have been beaten just once in 16 matches and that was a last-second defeat in extra time to Inter Milan in the Italian Super Cup. After that loss, the Old Lady beat Udinese 2-0 (Serie A) and Sampdoria 4-1 (in the Coppa Italia) at home. A 0-0 draw at AC Milan followed.

After a 2-0 win against Verona in Serie A, they beat Sassuolo 2-1 in the Cup. A 1-1 draw at top-four rivals Atalanta required a 90th-minute equaliser from Danilo. Their last match saw a very poor result as they drew 1-1 at home with Torino in the derby. They led early in the match but conceded just after the hour mark.

Juventus Team News

Max Allegri has right-back Danilo back for this match. He should start so Juan Cuadrado could play as a winger. Another possibility is the former playing in central defence because Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini are out injured. Daniele Rugani pulled up in the warmup before Torino with injury too so Matthijs de Ligt is the only fit central defender.

Speedy winger Federico Chiesa remains absent on the flank and Paulo Dybala went off against Torino so Federico Bernardeschi could get a start. Alvaro Morata could play on the left-wing with Dusan Vlahovic leading the line.

Juventus Motivation

Juve would take any draw from this match but there is little incentive to attack with no away goals rule. The Old Lady could channel the Italian teams of old and play for a 0-0.

Allegri’s team selection could indicate his approach if Vlahovic is alone in attack with Morata benched. With so many defenders injured, Juventus can’t afford to open up and expose their makeshift defence.

Key Stats

Villarreal have lost 2 of their last 11 home La Liga matches (unbeaten in 6, W4)

Villarreal have scored 2+ goals in 5 of their last 6 home La Liga matches

Villarreal have won 3 of their last 4 CL matches

Juventus have drawn 3 of their last 5 matches (W2)

Juve have lost just 1 of their last 7 CL matches

A very close match is expected. Juventus will likely arrive looking to avoid defeat and they should have enough to do it. A draw looks like excellent value for this match.
